How to write compelling headcanons: tips from the community

Anyone can write a headcanon. But the ones that spread through fan communities, get reblogged thousands of times, and make people say "I didn't know I needed this until now" — those take craft. Here's how to write headcanons that truly resonate.

1. Start with what canon actually shows you

The best headcanons don't contradict canon — they extend it. Before you write, think carefully about what the source material actually tells you about a character. What are their established traits, fears, relationships, and motivations? Your headcanon should feel like a natural outgrowth of those established facts.

If a character is shown to be fiercely independent in canon, a headcanon about them secretly craving connection will land harder than one that just invents a new trait from scratch — because it's in tension with something real.

2. Go specific, not general

Vague headcanons don't stick. Compare these two:

Weak: "Naruto is secretly sad sometimes."

Strong: "Naruto keeps a worn notebook where he sketches ramen bowls from every shop he's ever visited. The Ichiraku page is three times longer than any other, and the ink is blurry in places he'll never admit."

The second one is specific, visual, and emotionally layered. It tells you about the character without stating anything directly.

3. Use the "iceberg" principle

The most powerful headcanons imply more than they say. Leave things slightly unsaid. Let readers fill in the emotional meaning themselves — they'll feel it more deeply that way.

Instead of: "Hermione was lonely as a child and books were her only friends."

Try: "Hermione still flinches slightly whenever she returns a library book. Old habit — she used to keep them as long as possible."

4. Focus on small, everyday moments

Fan fiction often covers the big dramatic moments. Headcanons are most powerful when they zoom into the small, quiet, mundane details — morning routines, nervous habits, comfort foods, how someone holds a coffee cup. These details make characters feel real in a way that dramatic scenes sometimes can't.

5. Consider the emotional core

Every great headcanon has an emotional truth at its center. Ask yourself: what does this headcanon reveal about who this character really is? What need, fear, or longing does it illuminate? The more clearly you can answer that question, the stronger your headcanon will be.

6. Write for the fans who love this character

Think about what other fans of this character want to feel. Do they want to see the character's soft side? Their competence? Their vulnerability? Their humor? The best headcanons give fans something they've been wanting without knowing they were wanting it.
